Keystone Species
The Tasmanian Devil is a very important species living in this temperate rainforest ecosystem. Many organisms rely on their existence for their survival. That is why they are a keystone species at the Cradle Mountain- Lake Saint Clair National Park. If this species, which has many important interactions with other organisms, disappears, many other animals will be impacted. With
an open niche in the environment, another species will take its place. No one knows
how this new population will affect the surrounding organisms. Many changes to
this delicate ecosystem may lead to the extinction of other species. That is
why it is critical that we do everything in our power to
try and save the devils. (5) (4) (9) (22)
